The 16-volume Collected Works that started to come out in 1992 (14 volumes of Korczak's own writings and two supplementary volumes, viz. the chronology of Korczak's life and bibliography; volumes 1-12 and 14 have already been published) and in the preparation of which the KORCZAKIANUM Centre has been taking part, is the first comprehensive, scholarly presentation of Janusz Korczak's literary output.
In addition to well-known, oft-reprinted works, such as Jak kochać dziecko (How to Love a Child) and Król Maciuś Pierwszy (King Maciuś the First), many little-known or completely unknown texts have become available; new materials account for more than half of the full text of the edition. These include: early prose, for example Dzieci ulicy (Children of the Street), Korczak's first novel, and texts written at the turn of the 19th century; enormously varied and multifaceted social and educational articles; medical articles; innovative articles for children; texts written in Polish but published during the author's life only in Yiddish and Hebrew translations (now reconstructed in their original language); inedited works, including letters, notes on education and materials dating from the time of the Second World War. (Every volume contains notes discussing the origins of a given work, editor's comments and footnotes.)
The Polish edition is serving as the foundation for two collective editions in foreign languages - German and Hebrew. Important source materials not written by Korczak provide extensive supplementary information about the institutions, people and issues that preoccupied Korczak. These materials are published by KORCZAKIANUM under the title of "Z kręgu Korczaka. Tematy - Ludzie - Dokumenty” (The Korczak Circle - Issues - People - Documents). The following texts have been published so far: - Ida Merżan, Dzieci - miłość moja, duma moja, troska moja (Children - My Love, My Pride, My Care; 2002); Ida Merżan (1907-87) worked at the Dom Sierot orphanage as bursar and in other capacities; later she was to become an educator and activist of the Korczak movement. - Stefania Wilczyńska, Słowo do dzieci i wychowawców (A message to children and educators; 2004); Stefania Wilczyńska (1886-1942) was one of the founders of the Dom Sierot orphanage, its chief educator and head of the Dormitory. - Maria Falska, Nasz dom (Our Home; 2007); s selection of texts written by the manageress of the Nasz Dom orphanage, Maria Falska nee Rogowska (1877-1944). - Nasz Dom.
