The history of the Centre

Efforts to preserve the memory of Korczak and his work, and to save the surviving material traces of his existence, began almost immediately after the end of the Second World War. Personal acquaintances and close friends of Old Doctor founded the Janusz Korczak Memorial Committee (1946-48).

The KORCZAKIANUM Centre for Documentation and Research is housed in the Dom Sierot orphanage; pre-war address: ul. Krochmalna 92; today: ul. Jaktorowska 6. The building, which consists of a basement, a high ground floor, two storeys and an attic was designed by Henryk Stifelman and erected in 1911-12; the funds were raised by Towarzystwo "Pomoc dla Sierot" Society (the Orphan Relief Society) from voluntary contributions by Warsaw Jews.

The KORCZAKIANUM Centre for Documentation and Research collection includes various materials pertaining to Janusz Korczak's life and institutions connected with his work, both original and secondary, that is, archival documents, manuscripts and original typescripts, as well as copies (photocopies and transcripts); old and contemporary books, casual prints, press cuttings and photographs (original and reproduced).
